Carved Wood Doors
These projects are very labor intensive but at the same time very rewarding , each being a work of love. Wouldn't it be fabulous to have a work of art as a front door to welcome people into your home or business. ( Doors could also be cast in bronze .)
In 1997 I got my first front door commission for a giant multi- million $ log house in Canmore , AB. (near Banff), from the home owners . The yellow cedar panel that I would hand carve was brought in from the Queen Charlotte Islands and was gotten from a tree that died naturally. I carved an Elk , with the Bow river , forest and tree Sister Mountains in the back round. I'm always striving for a high degree of realism and accuracy in my depictions of nature . The door panel ; which measured 170 cm high x 76 cm wide x 6 cm thick , took me 450 hours to carve completely and stain it with a clear oil stain containing a UV inhibitor .
1998 My second front door commission , I accepted in 1998 and was for a house in Calgary , AB. I hand carved an Iris flower on the top panel , stems and leaves on the two lower panels , (all being of Honduras mahogany ) in 400 hours . The door around the panels is also Honduras mahogany which was stained after the door's completion to produce a stunning front door . The doors dimensions are 210 cm high x 82 cm wide and 6 cm wide.
In 1998 I accepted my third carved front door commission for a large house in Toronto ,ON. . This yellow cedar panel was made from timber of a tree that died naturally on the Queen Charlotte Islands , B.C. On the panel I carved a Grizzly bear catching a brook trout with forest and mountains in the back round . The 165 cm high x 76 cm wide x 6 cm thick panel was framed in mahogany and ebony to complete the door around the panel. It took 550 hours to complete the carving on the door panel which became the front door for a house that was assembled inside the Toronto Home Show Building where it ( the house ) was being sold.
